2019 Md. Media State Poll (Week 9)
The MPSSAA regular season is in the books — a short one, at that.
You need to go back to the 1950s, and in many cases 1940s, to be in an era where public school teams played regular seasons fewer than 10 games. Starting in the 1950s and especially during the 1960s, the 10-game schedule became the public school staple in Maryland.
The new playoff format has reduced the regular season for all teams to nine games, but 128 of the MPSSAA’s 180 football-playing programs will play a 10th game this week in the form regional playoff contest. After this week, 64 teams will be vying for one of the four classification state titles.
This week, the MIAA A playoffs get under way with the four state powerhouse programs once again clashing. There are no walkovers in this group. Even No. 4 seeded Archbishop Spalding pushed top-seeded McDonogh to overtime in the teams’ regular season clash. Mount St. Joseph and Calvert Hall meet in the other MIAA A Conference semifinal.
