Since the Maryland Media football rankings began in 1990, there have been 415 total polls. In that span, South River has made just four appearances — Week 10 in 1991 and Weeks 7, 8, and 9 in 2019.

Now, make it five.

South River, off to a 7-0 start, enters this week’s rankings at No. 25, one of two newcomers to the Top 25. Mergenthaler Vo-Tech, which had been hovering just outside the Top 25 in recent weeks, jumps in at No. 19 after a 20-12 win over former No. 13 Dunbar.

There’s some movement among the ranked teams, but 23 of last week’s Top 25 remain among the state’s elite, as voted on by the media. St. Frances Academy retains its hold on the No. 1 spot, followed by DeMatha, Archbishop Spalding, Quince Orchard, and Good Counsel.

The biggest climber this week is St. Mary’s-Annapolis, which surged six spots to No. 15 after edging former Top 10 team Calvert Hall, 14-13, in double overtime. Calvert Hall lands right behind at No. 16.
