Showdown Week could alter the Maryland Top 10

Two games featuring four of the state's highest-ranking teams take place this week, which could lead to a change in the top spot.

No. 2 DeMatha travels to No. 1 Good Counsel while No. 8 Wise visits No. 6 Flowers.

Certainly, the DeMatha-Good Counsel winner will be next week's No. 1 team. The Flowers-Wise winner could be inching toward a Top 5 ranking.

Before looking too far ahead, a glance back seems appropriate.

Fort Hill's defense put on quite a display in the Sentinels' 37-14 victory over previously state-ranked Mountain Ridge in a clash of undefeated teams. The win helped Fort Hill inch up a spot to No. 18. Mountain Ridge, meanwhile, fell out of the Top 25.

Otherwise, it was another relatively calm week for the state's best programs.

Patuxent and Old Mill won their way into this week's Top 25. Patuxent has been just on the outside of the Top 25 in recent weeks but the team's 6-0 start has been rewarded with a No. 23 ranking. Meanwhile, Old Mill stunned Broadneck to make its 2023 rankings debut at No. 24. Broadneck, which also has a loss to No. 16 McDonogh School, remains in the poll at No. 25.

Beyond the newcomers, there was not much movement this week. Rock Creek Christian, Milford Mill and Bishop McNamara each moved up a spot while Georgetown Prep, after falling to an undefeated team from Virginia, settled in at No. 13.
