Two rounds of MPSSAA postseason play do nothing to change which public schools are ranked

Talk about living up to the hype.

Every public school in the final regular-season Top 25 ranking has advanced to this week's state quarterfinals. In fact, every school -- public or private -- in the previous Top 25 remains in the Top 25 this week with only a few slight adjustments.

The Top 5 remains unchanged with St. Frances Academy, DeMatha, Archbishop Spalding, Quince Orchard, and Linganore leading the way. Since the previous ranking, DeMatha defeated St. John's (D.C.) 42-0 in the WCAC Capital semifinals, Spalding secured a fourth straight MIAA A Conference title, and Quince Orchard and Linganore cruised into the state quarterfinals as the No. 1 seeds. St. Frances Academy has not played, and it appears its season is complete after a planned meeting with IMG Academy (Fla.) fell through.

McDonogh, which pushed Spalding in the MIAA A Conference final before falling 30-22, moved from No. 9 to No. 6 this week, marking the largest upward move by a team.

As noted last week, voters largely viewed Flowers and North Point based on the on-field results since both teams forfeited a combined 15 games. As expected, both are back in the state quarterfinals. These two powers essentially received an administrative penalty to make them play postseason road games, and the net result is a pair of unfortunate state quarterfinal pairings. Flowers, 11-0 on the field, is the No. 8 seed in the 4A playoffs, meaning a state quarterfinal clash next weekend with top-seeded Quince Orchard. In 4A-3A, North Point, also 11-0 on the field but the No. 8 seed, will take on top-seeded Sherwood.

Another interesting state quarterfinal matchup is slated in Class 3A, where a pair of undefeated teams -- No. 11 Milford Mill Academy and No. 25 Edgewood -- square off in the 4-5 game.

This is the next-to-last ranking for the 2025 season.

The final poll will be released following the conclusion of the MPSSAA state tournament, in early December.
